Ruby's First day

                                    Ruby’s First Day

Ruby forgot her book bag and in her book bag was her lunch. It was her first day of school and it drove her nuts. The other kids were eating munch munch munch. But ruby sat staring at the table for she had no lunch. One boy had a sandwich of peanut butter, another salami, one had a hot dog, another pastrami. One girl had a sandwich of tuna, another of cheese, one had a pizza. “Could I have a bite please”, Ruby said to herself. Her stomach was turning, Her eyes could only stare. Her mouth was drooling from the wonderful smells in the air. She could not take it much longer she was about to shout. She could here the kids eating loudly a crunch crunch crunch crunch! But coming from behind was her mom with a sack. She had brought Ruby her book bag and inside her lunch.

Conceiving The Constitution

Conceiving The Constitution

Every high school student in the United States should have to learn and be tested on the Constitution. Nothing in my knowledge is butchered more on a daily basis than the Constitution. People will contest rights that exist or claim that rights that don't exist are amendments.  It is misquoted, misunderstood, and misjudged so often  that to most Americans it has lost all meaning. And if you want to live in a free society shouldn’t we understand what exactly that means. Wouldn’t a good place to start be by learning the Constitution and knowing what our freedoms are.

How well does the average American  know the constitution? According to the Annenberg Public Policy center not many. 55% of people surveyed did not know when the constitution was signed. They believed it was signed in 1776 the year of the Declaration of Independence as opposed to 1787 at the Constitutional Convention. Not a good start.

People mix up the order of the Amendments or remember  just parts, not allowing them to fully comprehend there rights. A study by the McCormick Freedom Museum showed only one in 1,000 knew the five freedoms of the first Amendment while 220 could name all 5 characters in the Simpson Family. On top of that 38% percent believed the right against self incrimination, a right of the Fifth Amendment is a First Amendment right.

Only ⅓ of Americans have even bothered to read the Constitution according to Sean O'Brien, executive director at the Orange, Va., center. He also stated that younger people 18 to 24 years old believe older people have a higher grasp on the Constitution. They don’t believe it is significant to there every day lives. But what could be more fundamental then knowing your rights. And how can't it affect the decisions we make on a daily basis.

It should be mandated by the federal government: If your school receives federal funds then  the students who attend those schools will know there rights under the Constitution. It can only be of benefit, not only to them but all those that surround them. We have structured a society based on these freedoms. It is time society takes notice and realize the importance of understanding the constitution. What if there needs to be a change in the Constitution? Who can lead the blind when they are unwilling to listen? We can’t change what we don’t know, or can we?

An Alaskan Meltdown

With the recent heat wave, Igloos in Southern Alaska are melting in astounding numbers leaving many families without homes. The insurance companies claim that the Eskimos are not covered for melt insurance and will not receive anything for their claims. Local authorities are having transportation problems, with only one truck in the area. They do have a fleet of snow mobiles, but with the lack of snow they aren’t working very well. Local hunter named Losing Hope has said that no one saw this coming since their homes have remained frozen for hundreds of years. With the release of new data from the climate change institute( which is an institute for the change of the climate) stating that melting was soon to occur, insurance companies started adding the stipulation that melting would not be covered by home insurance. Most Eskimos were unaware of the changes and the others that had read it thought it was a joke. On a lighter note the children are happy because with the addition of new rivers and lakes they have taken to swimming for the first time.

FEMAs reaction to this disaster is late once again and with only two planes flying into the area it is estimated the problem won’t be dealt until next winter. Blame is not being put on them because warning came late. They were told only 2 years ago of this upcoming disaster. FEMA representatives tell us that there signals got crossed and sent aid to Alabama instead. The Governor of Alabama was surprised to see FEMA arrive and begin building homes and fixing roads but he decided not to say anything because he has a large family and decided to give everyone a new home. This was considered a huge success for FEMA but later when they realized they went to the wrong state they considered it a minor mistake compared to their other recent blunders.

There is no telling when or if the there homes will once again freeze but leading Alaskan Climatologist said, “It will have to get cold sometime this is Alaska for Pete's sake”. The outcry from Alaskan communities has now been heard around the world and many countries have been chipping in by sending them ice blocks. So far this has been unsuccessful because on arrival they have only been getting pools of water, but better methods of transport are being thought of as we speak. Alaskans are hoping for a chilly Summer, and figure if winter was this hot, summer has got to be cold. There are no studies that are supporting this idea but then again there aren’t any that don’t either. So they will just hold out and wait and see what the weather has in store for them.
